What Happens After You Request a Quote

An initial life insurance quote is based on age, gender, coverage amount and general health class, but the premium is not final until underwriting confirms it. Underwriting typically includes a health questionnaire, a check against the Medical Information Bureau (MIB), and sometimes a paramedical exam, before the carrier issues the policy at the rate class it actually qualifies for.
The health questionnaire
Every application includes detailed questions about your medical history, current medications, family health history, tobacco and nicotine use, and lifestyle factors such as hazardous hobbies or recent travel. Answer these completely and accurately; a material misstatement discovered later, inside the contestability period, can affect a claim.
The MIB check
The Medical Information Bureau is a database insurers check and report to, which flags whether past applications disclosed conditions that are not showing up on a current one. It is not a credit check or a public database, it exists specifically to catch inconsistencies between what you tell one carrier and what you told another.
The paramedical exam, when one is required
Depending on your age, the coverage amount, and the carrier's own underwriting rules, you may be scheduled for a brief paramedical exam: height, weight, blood pressure, and a blood and urine sample, usually done at your home or office by a licensed examiner the carrier arranges. Some policies, particularly smaller final expense amounts, skip this step entirely and rely on the questionnaire alone.
A realistic timeline
A no-exam policy can sometimes be approved in days. A fully underwritten policy requiring an exam more typically takes two to six weeks from application to approval, depending on how quickly exam results and any requested medical records come back. Building in that timeline matters if you are coordinating coverage around a specific date, such as a PCS move or losing employer coverage.
Les tells you upfront which underwriting path a given application is likely to follow based on your age, health and the coverage amount, rather than letting the timeline be a surprise.
