Term, Whole or IUL: Which Life Insurance Fits You
By Lesley David Varisce, licensed insurance agent, Clarksville, TN | Updated October 26, 2026
Term life pays a death benefit only if you die inside a set period, usually 10 to 30 years, and costs the least. Whole life lasts your lifetime, builds cash value, and is designed to hold one premium the entire time. Indexed universal life (IUL) is also permanent, but its cash-value growth tracks a stock index and its cost of insurance can rise, so it does not hold a fixed premium the way whole life is designed to.
Term life: the cheapest way to cover a specific window
NAIC describes term life as coverage for a set period, often tied to a specific financial obligation, with a death benefit paid only if you die during that term. A 20 or 30 year level-term policy fits a mortgage, a car note, or the years until kids are grown, because the premium is fixed for that term and the coverage ends when the term does.
Whole life: a premium designed to stay level for life
Whole life is what most people mean by "permanent" coverage. Wisconsin's insurance commissioner describes it as coverage designed to last your entire life if sufficient premiums are paid, with level premiums and a set death benefit, and with the potential to build cash value over time. Of the three, whole life is the one built around a premium that stays put.
Indexed universal life: flexible, not rate-locked
IUL is also permanent, but it works differently. Cash-value interest is credited based on the return of an outside index such as the S&P 500, usually with a floor near 0% so a down market does not erase value, and a cap that limits the upside. Premiums and the cost of insurance inside an IUL policy can both move over time, which is the tradeoff for the higher growth potential. Les walks through the real cap and participation rate on any policy he quotes, since those numbers vary by carrier.
Why a PCS move matters for your policy
A Fort Campbell family's next set of orders can land in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Virginia, Texas or New York, and an agent only licensed in one state cannot service a policy once you move out of it. Les Varisce is a licensed independent agent based in Clarksville and holds active licenses in all six of those states, so a policy started here keeps the same agent on the other end of the phone after a PCS.
Which one, for which stage
- New to the service, renting, no dependents yet: term life covers the SGLI gap cheaply while you decide on anything permanent. See our guide to SGLI and VGLI after Fort Campbell.
- Homeowner or new parent: term life sized to the mortgage or to the years until kids are grown, compared across carriers rather than taking the first quote.
- Planning past retirement: whole life or IUL for the cash-value component, often paired with an annuity for guaranteed retirement income.
Les compares term, whole life and IUL options from multiple carriers before you decide, and prices change with age, health and tobacco use, so only a real quote settles which one is cheaper for you.
