How an Annuity Turns Savings Into Income
By Lesley David Varisce, licensed insurance agent, Clarksville, TN | Updated October 20, 2026
An annuity is a contract with an insurance company that converts a lump sum or a series of payments into a guaranteed stream of income, often for life. Where life insurance pays a death benefit, an annuity is built to pay you, typically in retirement, and the payout can be structured to never run out no matter how long you live.
Fixed versus fixed-indexed, the basic split
A fixed annuity credits a set interest rate the carrier guarantees for a stated period. A fixed-indexed annuity instead credits interest based on the performance of an outside index, within a floor (so a down market does not reduce your principal) and a cap that limits the upside, similar in concept to how an indexed universal life policy credits interest. Neither type invests your principal directly in the market.
The free-look period
Every annuity contract comes with a free-look period, typically 10 to 30 days depending on the state, during which you can cancel and get your money back if the contract is not what you expected. Read the actual contract, not just the sales illustration, during that window.
Surrender charges
Withdrawing more than a set percentage of an annuity's value in the early contract years, usually the first 5 to 10 years, triggers a surrender charge that reduces what you receive. That charge typically declines each year until it reaches zero. An annuity is built for money you do not need immediate full access to, which is why sizing it correctly against other savings matters before you buy.
Where this fits with a TSP or 401(k)
Some Fort Campbell and Clarksville families move retirement savings, including an accumulated TSP balance, into an annuity closer to retirement specifically for guaranteed income that cannot run out. See where life insurance cash value fits alongside a TSP for the companion piece on that comparison.
