Who Term Life Insurance Actually Fits Best

Term life insurance pays a death benefit only if you die within a set period, usually 10 to 30 years, and it costs less than permanent coverage because it is not building cash value. That makes it a fit for a specific list of situations: years with young children at home, a mortgage still being paid off, or an income your household depends on while you are working. Outside that window, a different product may fit better.
A new mortgage, sized to the loan
A 30-year mortgage and a 30-year level-term policy solve the same problem on the same timeline. If something happens to the income that pays the note, a term policy sized to the remaining balance keeps the house from being a second loss on top of the first. Once the mortgage is paid off, the need that policy was covering is gone, which is exactly why it does not need to last forever. For term length, coverage amount and how a policy you own differs from credit life sold by a lender, see term life insurance for a mortgage.
Young kids at home
A term length that runs until your youngest is through high school, often 15 to 20 years, covers the stretch where two incomes (or one, for a single parent) are doing the most work and a loss would hit hardest. The premium is fixed for that whole term, so a 20-year-old policy bought today still costs the same in year 19.
Replacing income during your working years
A term policy sized at several years of take-home pay gives a surviving spouse time, not a windfall. Time to adjust a budget, retrain, or simply keep the household running without an immediate income cliff. This is the most common reason families buy term life in the first place, and it is the easiest amount to size: take current income, multiply by the years of support you want to replace.
What term life is not built for
Term life does not build cash value and it ends when the term ends, so it is not the tool for lifetime coverage, estate planning, or a savings component. See how term, whole and IUL compare if a lifetime need is part of what you are solving for, and how term life actually works mechanically for renewal and conversion details.
Les prices term life across multiple carriers based on your actual situation, since the right length and amount depend on what you are covering, not a formula.
